The First 4k resolution Document Camera
The Hovercam Ultra 8 is the front runner of the Document Camera industry. Harnessing the power of their award winning Solo 8 document camera, Hovercam has built the Ultra 8 using the chassis of one of the best document cameras on the market. What distinguishes the Ultra 8 from the Solo 8 is the Ultra 8’s ability to connect directly to your display device via HDMI or VGA connection (TV, projector, monitor etc.) completely eliminating the need for a computer.
The Hovercam Ultra 8 offers class leading 30 frames per second video output through an HDMI connection, tremendously reducing the video lag that plagues most other document cameras in its class. The Ultra 8’s unique mixture of mechanical zoom and ASR zoom produces a 12X optical zoom equivalent.
One of the most prominent features of the Ultra 8 that separates it from the Hovercam Solo 8 is its touch sensitive preview monitor. Located directly on the base of the camera, this monitor allows you to see the camera’s image and most importantly offering full control of the camera without a computer. Since the Ultra 8 is preloaded with Hovercam’s Flexview and FlexCap software you will be able to record HD video, take snapshots, web conference, scan and annotate documents.
Recording Format: AVI
Will this camera work with OCR software such as Freedom Scientific OpenBook or Abby FineReader?

Why does the Ultra 8 have a VGA port? Can I get the full 8MP experience using it or would I need HDMI?
The Ultra 8 has a VGA port so everyone can use it. Not all projectors or TV''s will have a HDMI port so the VGA is there for back up. You would need the HDMI for the full HD experience but you still take advantage of the picture clarity, incredible zoom, and touch sensitive preview monitor when you use the VGA port.
What''s the main difference between Ultra 8 and other HoverCam products?
The Ultra 8 is basically a more advanced version of the Solo 8 and it shares the same image processor, ASR zoom, and 4K resolution with the Soloo 8. What makes the Ultra 8 the top of the line Hovercam is the addition of video outputs (VGA and HDMI) so you don''t need a computer. In addition, there is a touch sensitive preview monitor/control panel. No other Hovercam has this feature, in fact, there aren''t all that many cameras with a regular preview monitor, let alone one that''s touch sensitive.
What is the difference between the Ultra8 and Solo8?
The Ultra camera offers the same amazing 4K resolution as the Solo8 but it now has VGA port and HDMI so you can run this without a computer. For most people the Solo8 is the way to go but for those that need to output directly to a projector or TV screen, this is the way to go. Furthermore, it has a touch sensitive color LCD screen. Both cameras use the same sensor so the still and video quality will be identical.
What is ASR?
ASR stands forAdaptive Sensor Resolution. It is HoverCam''s proprietary patent-pending technology for dynamically scaling and cropping. This technology allows the camera to deliver 8MP images dynamically adapted to the resolution of the user''s monitor or output display. Some other manufacturers state their document cameras use a 5MP sensor, yet they only seem to output 720P or 1080i video, which is only 1 megapixel per frame. With the Solo 8, the end-user receives a true 8MP image.
Digital cameras are designed to use a sensor''s full resolution for capturing still images, but during video recording the video is scaled or cropped to a lower resolution. For example, high-end SLR cameras report resolutions as high as 20MP or 40MP. However, you can only get the 20MP or 40MP resolution in a still image, not in video. When recording video, you only get 720P or 1080P resolution, which is equivalent to 1MP and 2MP respectively. Other manufacturers'' document cameras may have a 5MP sensor, but in reality the video is scaled down to show 720P which is 1MP resolution. The reasons for delivering low resolution video were based on the consideration that display screen sizes are normally much smaller than the maximum sensor resolution, or, the storage devices have limited capacity, or, bandwidth limitation. For document camera consumers, however, the higher sensor reading is meant as window dressing to enhance product specifications, with little or no gain in performance.
HoverCam Ultra 8 achieves delivery of true, full 8MP resolution at full-motion speed with no permanent compromise in clarity/resolution. Every frame is captured with 8 million pixels, followed by a frame by frame scaling and cropping process to fit the viewing area of interest to the maximum size of the display area. The Solo 8''s 8MP sensor is fully utilized to deliver full resolution for video viewing or recording at any given time.
I googled and found a 10MP USB document camera. How does the Ultra 8 compare?
The performance of Ultra 8 is unequaled by any other document camera. For other manufacturers, using a sensor with a higher pixel count is straightforward and there are CMOS sensors with 20MB resolution available. However, a camera incorporating a 10MP sensor must have supporting processors and software to deliver high resolution to a host computer. Short of doing so, the vendors are either sending less than 1 frame per second, which is unacceptably slow, or, they are reducing clarity to 1MP, which is unacceptable clarity. Only the Solo 8 delivers the sensor''s full 8MP resolution at 30fps. No compromises, no short-changing the customer.
Does the Ultra 8 have a VGA or HDMI pass through.
No, it does not have any pass through inputs.
Can I use the hovercam with a smartboard or interactive whiteboard?
HoverCam Whiteboard Connector is a small Flash application which allows users of Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) software, such as Smart Notebook, Promethean ActivInspire, eBeam ActiveCapture, or Mimio Studio Notebook to embed and manipulate live video from a HoverCam document camera.
Can I still connect the Ultra 8 through USB if I needed to?
Yes, you can absolutely connect through USB. When using USB you would have a very similar experience to the Solo 8 as you would be running it through your software. If you don''t think you are going to use the VGA or HDMI port, you might want to consider the Solo 8.
